A few weeks back, the acclaimed TV show 60 minutes dedicated it’s entire show to one of it’s original founders Mike Wallace who recently passed away. I have been watching 60 minutes regularly for the past 15 years of so, and it reminds me of Sunday dinners with my family. There is always an interesting story or lesson that helps center me for the week. This particular show had a lesson in it that reminded me of my own business.

He said that looking back on the “early years”, Mr. Wallace spent over forty years at 60 Minutes, he said he looks back on those years as “Spring Training.” His point is that he had to put the work in the early years to help make the show the success that it is today and that they didn’t have a masterpiece on Day 1. It was a work in progress.

As I reflect on our current offerings to our families, we are confident that MPBB is much better than it was when we began with seven players in 2005. Although we now serve over 600 players annually, we strive to improve everyday. Just like the Phillies who start each spring to take the grounders and to hit off the tee, there is always room for improvement.
There is more work to be done whether we are just getting started or in the twighlight of our careers. This is the daily message that our coaches use to remind the players be successful on and off the court.

As we train the youth to become better, we wanted you to know that we are in training ourselves, constantly aiming to make the day better than the last. Thanks Mike Wallace for the message and reminder that Success is a Choice! Who’s ready to get better today?

The harder I work, the luckier I get.
The more I help people, the better I feel.
The more open I am, the more the world opens to me.
The less I need to be right, the more I learn.
The more I serve, the more my life is fulfilled.
The stronger my relationships, the more I want to contribute to the world around me.
God works in mysterious ways.

I was just talking to one of my favorite high school teachers, Bob Fles.
An elderly woman walks by and asks for a ride to the train station. I had just been talking to Dr. Fles about moving out of our house. This woman, lives in the exact house that we want to buy on the exact street. I told her that I wanted to buy her house, and she is getting ready to sell…. to be continued

Live every day, Success is a Choice!

Last night, I trained with a sophomore who’s goal it is to make the Varsity team next year.

It doesn’t take long to figure out a player’s strengths and weaknesses. The key in helping each and every player is to light a spark in them and to get to them to see that the opportunity in front of them won’t be there forever.

I have found that there are three ingredients for success, on and off the court:
1) Desire to achieve or do something
2) Careful planning with a schedule and deadlines
3) Surrounding yourself with people who can help you to achieve

The road is not easy, but it is rewarding and filled with twists and turns.
The lesson for him and for all is to figure out what you want and simply GO FOR IT!

We must simply GO FOR IT with unbridled enthusiasm and passion.
Success is a Choice!

At the recommendation of his father, Coach Matt has been reading a book called, Awaken the Buddha Within, by Lama Surya Das.

Here’s a quick summary of the Four Noble Truths of the Buddhist teachings:

1. Life is difficult.
2. Life is difficult because of attachment because we crave satisfaction in ways that are inherently dissatisfying.
3. The possibility of liberation from difficulties exist for everyone.
4. The way to realize this liberation and enlightenment is by leading a compassionate life of virtue, wisdom and meditation. These three spiritual trainings comprise the teachings of the Eight-Fold Path to Enlightenment.

I find each training or session that we have with the players in our program to be challenging, fun, and imperfect. We strive to teach every kid as much as we know in the given amount of time, but understand that there will always be work to do. There will always be lessons to teach. Above all, we know that the lessons that we teach are more than basketball. Life is difficult for everyone, and kids need to know that it is just a game and the goal first and foremost is to have fun!

My father is my favorite coach of all time. Over forty years ago, he wrote a poem about coaching kids that I keep close to me. It has a baseball theme, but it’s applicable to all sports. Back in the day, he won a Philadelphia Daily News poetry prize worth $100, but the value is priceless to me. The values that he instilled in me as a child: Courage, Determination, Respect, Sportsmanship, and Teamwork are the core principles of the Matt Paul Basketball program.

Each week, I observe the parents on the sidelines and think of The Coach. You can see the kids turn when they hear their parent’s voice. Sometimes it’s a simple “Good Job” or “Nice Play”, but I often hear “Get Back”, “Hands Up”, “Go Get the Ball” and sometimes even a “No, Not That Way.” It’s hard being a kid and listening to a coach, especially during a game. It’s even more difficult to listen to a coach and the home coaches, you know the ones who coach them everyday with doing their homework, picking up their dirty laundry, and cleaning up after dinner.

The next time your child has a game or even a practice, keep The Coach in mind and reflect on how your parents treated you when they were or weren’t on the sideline. And cheer like crazy when your kids do well, they love to see you smile!

COACH – Richard F. Paul

Teach me to stand,

Correct at the plate.

Teach me patience,

And how to wait.

Teach me comfort,

Within the batter’s box.

Teach me to wear,

My cup beneath my jock.

Teach me to run,

And touch every base.

Teach me to move,

When the ball’s in my face.

Teach me to enjoy the sounds of the crowd.

Teach me courage,

When our team’s getting plowed.

Teach me humility, friendship, and style,

But please don’t forget you’re teaching a child.
